Silver Lake is one of Los Angeles' best neighborhoods, without a doubt. The neighborhood gets its name from the Silver Lake Reservoir, named after Water Board Commissioner Herman Silver, who was instrumental in the creation of the lake more than 100 years ago. Today Silver Lake (a.k.a. Silverlake) is the epicenter of the Los Angeles independent music scene, is home to great restaurants and shopping, and features some of the best elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (Ivanhoe Elementary School and Micheltorena Elementary School)
Although the majority of homes in Silver Lake were built in the 1920's and 30's and represent some of the best examples of Spanish-style and English Tudor-style homes in Los Angeles, Silver Lake is home to numerous architecturally significant modern, contemporary and mid-century homes. The Moreno Highlands neighborhood alone contains notable works by John Lautner, Rudolph Schindler, Gregory Ain, Paul Williams and Robert D. Farquhar.
Silver Lake is bordered by the communities of Los Feliz, Atwater Village, Echo Park, East Hollywood and Elysian Valley. Sunset Juntion, home the some of the neighborhood's most interesting shops and finest restaurants, is located in Silver Lake.
